Sports Roundup: Boys’ Soccer Hopes to Build on Strong Finish

The team looks to build on a successful finish and playoff run. An alumni game will be held this weekend to help raise funds for the program as well.

Narragansett High School boys’ soccer coach Ryan Kanaczet is hopeful that his team can use a strong playoff run last year to help further build the program.

“I’m hoping the playoff experience will help them with leadership,” he said, noting that this year’s team could be a bit deeper than last year’s.

Kanaczet noted that he has a “strong junior class,” supplemented by two or three seniors that will log significant playing time.

From that team, the Mariners lost Cory Durkin, who was named to Second Team All-Division, and Third Team All-Division member John Sheil.

Senior Aaron Libman is one of the players the Mariners will look to for leadership. Libman was named First Team All-Division in 2010. Starting goalkeeper and junior Zachary McKanna returns as well.

Freshmen currently listed on the varsity roster are Devon Chofay, Logan Cote, Kyle Frankovich, Steve Iannucci, Yianni Koukos, Thomas Lindley, Aiden Maynard and Jacob Zuchowski.

However, Kanaczet said the roster is still fluxuating. As of last Wednesday, he had only seen his team for three days of practice, and the hurricane canceled the scheduled season-opening Injury Fund game at East Greenwich on Tuesday.

The Mariners open up their season tonight, hosting Toll Gate at 3:45 p.m.  Junior varsity plays at 5:15 p.m.
