Sports Roundup: Girls’ Soccer Remains Unbeaten; Middle School Results

The Mariners keep up their success on the soccer pitch, and manage to split their season opening cross country races.

In the only other game scheduled Tuesday besides tennis, the Narragansett High School girls’ soccer team remains undefeated in Division III play after a 3-1 victory vs. Shea at Max Reed Field in Pawtucket.

According to a box score from The Providence Journal, Dolci Wagner scored two goals for the Mariners (2-1, 2-0 Division III), with Sam Harrington chipping in one. The Mariners controlled the game though, putting 14 shots on Shea (0-2, 0-2 Division III) goalie Jessica Caetano. In contrast, Liz Castro had two saves.

Early in the season, the Mariners have excelled at spreading the ball around through two games. Eleven different players have scored, partly thanks to an 11-0 win at Davies on Friday.

Narragansett has its home opener Thursday, hosting Rogers (0-1, 0-1 Division III) at 4 p.m. Rogers lost its lone game of the year so far against Burrillville 11-0.

Cross County Teams Split Openers

The Narragansett High School girls’ and boys’ cross country teams both split their season and home openers against Chariho and West Warwick on Monday.

The boys beat West Warwick 25-33, but lost to Chariho 16-47. The girls had a closer match with Chariho, losing 24-32, but easily handled West Warwick 19-37.

Both teams have their next race Monday at Curtis Corner Middle School in South Kingstown against Westerly and the hosting Rebels. The race starts at 4 p.m.

Middle School Soccer Teams Undefeated on Tuesday

In separate games against Msgr. Clarke, the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams both managed to avoid defeat.

The boys’ team won 5-0, improving to 2-0 in Southern Division play. The boys beat Westerly 3-0 on Friday.

The girls’ team tied Msgr. Clarke 0-0, earning its first point of the year. The girls lost to Westerly 7-2 on Friday.

Both teams are scheduled to play Thursday against Jamestown at 3:30 p.m. The boys are home, and the girls are away.

Games This Week

  • In girls’ volleyball action, the Mariners (2-0, 2-0 Division II-South) host Exeter-West Greenwich (3-0, 2-0 Division II-South) at 6 p.m. Thursday, with junior varsity at 4:15 p.m. According to a box score from The Providence Journal, the Mariners easily handled Middletown on Monday, 25-14, 25-10 and 25-6. Results have not yet been posted on RIIL for the match.
  • Boys’ soccer hosts East Greenwich (2-0, 2-0 Division II-South) at 3:45 p.m. Friday. Junior varsity is at 5 p.m. Also, junior varsity is scheduled to play at South Kingstown 3:45 p.m. Thursday. The game will be at Tuckertown Park.
  • Football plays at Tiverton (1-1, 0-0 Division III) on Saturday, in the Division III opener for both teams. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
