Sports Roundup: Tennis, Girls’ Soccer Win Games; Volleyball Struggles

Looking back and looking forward at various Mariner teams.

According to results posted online, the Narragansett High School girls’ tennis and girls’ soccer teams won all three of their recent matches.

In tennis action, the Mariners (3-2, 2-2 Division II-South) picked up their first two league victories of the year, beating Coventry (0-3, 0-3 Divison II-South) and Westerly (0-3, 0-3 Division II-South) by 5-2 margins on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to box scores from The Providence Journal, on Wednesday and Thursday the Mariners swept doubles play, and got enough points in singles play for victories.

Narragansett next plays Tuesday at Chariho (0-2, 0-2 Division II-South). The match starts at 3:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Mariners continued to excel on the soccer pitch, easily beating Rogers 8-2 in their home opener.

According to a box score from The Providence Journal, freshman Chelsea Sahagian had a hat trick from the forward position. Jackie Iannucci and Dolci Wagner each had two goals, and Sam Harrington also had a goal. Liz Castro made a save.

The victory improved the Mariners’ league record to 3-0 in Division III play, and 3-1 overall. Rogers fell to 3-1 overall and in Division III play.

Narragansett plays 4 p.m. Monday at Cranston Stadium against Cranston East (4-1, 3-0 Division III). Their next home game is 4 p.m. Wednesday against Johnston (2-1, 2-1 Division III), whom the Mariners .

Girls’ Volleyball Drops First Game of the Year, vs. EWG

The girls’ volleyball team showed that they still have things to work on Thursday night, as they lost to perennial Division II powerhouse Exeter-West Greenwich 3-1.

According to a box score on The Providence Journal, the Mariners lost 25-15, 25-17, 22-25 and 25-17. The Scarlet Knights improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Division II-South play, while Narragansett fell to 2-1 overall and in Division II-South play.

The Mariners have another tough test in their next game, which is against Barrington (2-1, 2-0 Division II-South). The game is at Barrington 6 p.m. Tuesday. Narragansett’s next home game is 6 p.m. next Friday against Tiverton (1-1, 1-1 Division II-South).

Middle School Sports: Boys’ Soccer Undefeated

In middle school soccer action, the boys’ team remains undefeated on the season after play Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday, the Mariners (3-0, 3-0 Southern Division) beat the Jamestown School 6-4. The Jamestown School fell to 1-2 overall and in league play with the loss.

Results from the girls’ team, which played at Jamestown, were unavailable. The girls’ team hosts Wickford on Tuesday, while the boys’ team travels to Wickford. Both games are at 3:30 p.m.

  • Boys’ soccer hosts East Greenwich (3-0, 3-0 Division II-South) at 3:45 p.m. Friday. Junior varsity is at 5 p.m.
  • Football plays at Tiverton (1-1, 0-0 Division III) on Saturday, in the Division III opener for both teams. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
