According a release from Narragansett Police, the man reported to police headquarters after being made aware that he was missing by a friend.

The search of local waters for a missing man is now over, as he reported to Narragansett Police Headquarters on Monday evening after a friend told him that he was, well, missing.

According to a press release from Narragansett Police captain William F. McGovern, at about 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 10, a 27-year-old Narragansett resident told police that he believed the reports of the missing swimmer were about him.

The man told police that he was on the beach, swimming, from about 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. He came to the police station after a friend advised him of the news reports of the missing swimmer.

According to police, the man told them that he regularly goes for a swim after taking a run on the beach. He wasn’t aware of the search effort until he was told.

Police said that the description of the man matched the accounts of witnesses. The Coast Guard and Department of Environmental Management were both informed, in order to call off any rescue efforts on the part of those agencies.
