[VIDEO] First Year Squad No Problem for NHS Lax
The Mariners score 12 straight goals to remain undefeated in Division III play.
NARRAGANSETT – The Narragansett Mariners boys’ lacrosse team has shown off a deeper, more muscled roster so far this year, and improved to 3-0 thanks to a 14-2 drubbing of a first-year Westerly squad Tuesday afternoon.
Narragansett (3-0, 3-0 Division III-South) was led by five goals from Henry McGreen, and six points (two goals, four assists) from P.J. Dougherty Jr. Seven different Mariners scored goals against Westerly (0-1, 0-1 Division III-South).
Captain and senior defender Connor Timpson said the team spent a lot of time in the weight room in the off-season, which has helped with their strength and conditioning, along with adding several players.

“We just have better numbers,” he said. “We’ve matured and gotten bigger and strong … It’s nice to see the growth of the players.”
Head coach Mark Chafee agreed with Timpson’s assessment.

“Some of these guys are a little bigger and stronger, plus we’ve added some good freshmen,” he said.
As opposed to last year, when depth was an issue, Narragansett turned the tables on Westerly and separated from the Bulldogs in the third period. The Mariners turned a 4-2 halftime lead into a 14-2 final, using a patient offensive attack headed by Dougherty.
“Our third quarter, we really executed,” Chafee said. The Mariners scored eight goals in the third.
McGreen was the primary beneficiary, but freshman Steve Iannucci, senior captain Zachary Humulock, junior Matt McGreen and Timpson also scored. Goalie and captain Mitchell Kennedy didn’t have many problems handling the Westerly attack, along with defense members Jack Salomone, Matt Storti and Dillon Sheridan.
When asked what he needed to work on, Timpson said he and the rest of the team still needed to pass better.
“I’ve got to open my eyes and pass the ball, and to stop trying to be the hero,” he said.
Chafee said he expected Smithfield, who the Mariners , to again be among the top teams in Division III. This year, because of new programs like Westerly and Coventry, Division III is split into a north and a south division.
Narragansett is off for the rest of the week. The Mariners next play Wednesday, April 18, as they host Warwick Vets (0-0) at 3:45 p.m. Narragansett’s rematch with Smithfield is at Smithfield High School on April 30.
