[VIDEO] Vets No Match for Lady Mariners’ Press

Using a slew of steals, the Mariners steamroll past Warwick Vets 55-29 Friday night.

NARRAGANSETT – Using 24 steals via an intense full-court press, and eight blocks in the half court defense, the Narragansett High School girls’ basketball team coasted to an easy 55-29 win against the Warwick Veterans Hurricanes on Friday night.

The Mariners (7-2, 5-0 Division II-South) jumped out to a 12-0 lead before Vets scored its first basket after five minutes in the first half. The game was 34-14 at the half, and Vets (1-9, 0-5 Division II-South) never got within single digits.

Junior Mercedes Harris led the Mariners with 14 points, and also chipped in four steals and three blocks. Against the press, the Hurricanes struggled against the length of freshman Abby McKanna and the lateral quickness of freshman Chelsea Sahagian.

McKanna finished with seven points, seven steals and a block. Sahagian had five points, five steals and two blocks.

Narragansett head coach Kathryn Mahoney subbed liberally after the first 10 minutes of the game. Every player on Narragansett’s varsity roster played at least five minutes.

Mahoney said that despite the talent disparity between the two teams, she always stresses a few points for her team.

“They can always play tough defense, and I emphasize running the set plays through,” she said, adding that she was pleased with the press defense. “Abby has those long arms, and Chelsea is one of those players people hate to play against.”

The first-place Mariners will get a stiffer challenge on Wednesday, when they travel to West Warwick (6-2, 3-1 Division II-South).

“I think it’ll be a good test to see where we are as a team,” Mahoney said.
