Wrestling: Two Middle School Champions; Strong Finishes at Mt. Greylock
Jim Sauro repeats as a middle school champion, and Chris Storti wins his first state title.
The Narragansett Pier School can add two more wrestling champions to its honor roll, as eighth graders James Sauro and Chris Storti won their weight divisions Saturday at the middle school state tournament.
According to information provided by head coach and Pier School athletic director Mike Millen, Sauro improved his overall record to 29-0 and picked up his second state championship, this time at 140 pounds. Last year, Sauro won a title wrestling at 119 pounds.
Storti improved his record to 34-1, winning the state title at 185 pounds. His lone loss in his middle school career came at last year’s state final.

Sixth grader Cole McGill also had a strong showing at the tournament. In his first year as a middle school wrestler, he earned sixth place at 89 pounds. As a team, the Mariners finished 14th of 19 teams, despite only having three eligible wrestlers.

Also, according to Millen, the high school team had six wrestlers earning points this past weekend at the Mt. Greylock tournament in Williamstown, MA.
Mike Gallagher was the top finisher, taking second place. Austin Ranney, Rob Peterson and Reed Nelson took fourth place finishes, and Matt McGreen and Alex Millen had fifth place finishes.
The full high school team (8-7, 8-4 Division II-South) competes at 7 p.m. tonight at East Greenwich High School (2-9, 2-9 Division II-South). The Mariners host Mount Pleasant (0-11, 0-11 Division II-South) at 7 p.m. Thursday. And on Saturday, select wrestlers will be competing at the Smithfield Invitational starting at 9:30 a.m. at Smithfield High School.
