Courtside, Dudley Newton Home in Newport, Sells for $1.6m, and Other Home Sales

NEWPORT, RI—An historic Dudley Newton house built in 1877 that once served as the rectory for Emmanuel Episcopal Church has sold for $1.625 million.

Courtside, located at 3 Bellevue Court, was originally listed for $1.69 million, a price right on the money for a 4,787 square foot gem in the heart of this historic and highly-desirable area of Newport.

The original resident was Rev. Robert B. Peet and it was a rector's house for more than 50 years. In 1928, the house was bought by Edward Berwind, a coal baron and owner of The Elms, which is a hop skip and a jump from Courtside's private and park-like grounds.

Other famous residents include naval officers during World War II and Mr. and Mrs. James J. Altemus, an inventor, World War II Navy veteran and patent holder, notable for advancements in torpedoes and aircraft de-icing.
