UPDATED: One Firefighter Hurt in Newport Fire

Two homes were damaged in a hot smoky fire on Jackson Road on Friday, one significantly.

NEWPORT, RI—One Newport firefighter was hurt after a hot, smoky fire broke out at a Jackson Road house that spread to a neighboring structure before crews had the blaze under control on Friday.

Newport Fire Department Deputy Chief Andrew O. Elder said that firefighters arrived at 5 Jackson Road after the first alarm rang at 1:09 p.m. and found smoke billowing from the building and fire venting from the basement windows.

Elder was among the firefighters who arrived after a second alarm was called about 20 minutes later as heavy smoke and high heat blocked their entry into the basement.

The age of the structure, built in 1878, which Elder described as a "big, beautiful building," enabled flames to spread quickly up the walls to the third floor. Firefighters had to work their way into the house to get control of the fire, which appears to have started in the basement.

Meanwhile, the fire breached a common wall and began to burn the structure next door at 6 Jackson Road before crews were able to knock down the flames.

"[Firefighters] did a super job," Elder said. "It was a good save. Every piece of apparatus in the city was working. The guys were taking on a tough, hot fire. A couple went through four air bottles, which is unusual."

One firefighter suffered an injury to his hand during the fire. All occupants made it out safely, along with a dog, Elder said.

Newport firefighters were joined by Middletown and Navy firefighters who provided assistance. Providence Canteen also responded to provide support as well.

The fire is now under investigation. Elder said crews were at the scene for several hours dealing with hot spots.

Newport Fire Capt. Phil Oliveira commanded the scene.

The buildings are part of a neighborhood right near Fort Adams and populated by many Navy families.
