Leonard Will Seek Reelection to Third Ward Council Seat

Longtime City Councilor Kate Leonard said I feel that the City Council allows me to give back to the community that I love."

NEWPORT, RI—Newport City Councilor Kate Leonard said has enjoyed her time representing residents of the Third Ward, a role she embraced just a few months after moving to the City-by-the-Sea full-time in 1995.

Since then, she has been a fixture on the council as a taxpayer advocate who said she always casts her votes in the direction of Newporters over out-of-towners. Since her first election, she has served continuously, missing just two terms over 21 years.

On Saturday morning, Leonard announced that she hopes to serve for another two years and will seek reelection this November, saying her service "has brought me enjoyment and I feel that the City Council allows me to give back to the community that I love."

In a statement, Leonard said "I believe my role is to work for the people--both residents and businesses. My goal has always been to support those who live and work here--to not tax people out of town and to bring job opportunities that will bring young people who grew up here back to be with their families."
