Miantonomi Park Tower Open for Memorial Day Event

Pay respect to service members and climb the stone steps for a remarkable view from the 100-foot tower at Newport's highest point.

NEWPORT, RI—The remarkable Miantonomi Park Tower will be open on Monday for an event observing Memorial Day.

The event, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., will also recognize the tower's historical significance as a memorial to World War I veterans. It was built in 1929 and designed by William Kendall of the firm McKim, Mead & White.

Adults and families are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult.

The event is an opportunity to climb the stone steps of the tower and gaze out on the stunning views afforded from the top observation deck.

The tower, located at Newport's highest point, often gives a view of Providence and even Block Island on a clear day.

The tower rests in an historic and important area in Newport’s north end. It was the seat of power for Narragansett Indian Sachem Miantonomi and was bought by English colonists in 1637.

The city bought the property in 1921 from the Stokes family.
