Nassau Hastie House Sells for $655,000

The historic Nassau Hastie House at 37 Division St. sold for $655,000 recently, according to data from the statewide Multiple Listing Service.

The house, built in 1760, features many original details, notably the gorgeous wide-planked original wood floors and paneling details throughout.

The three-story, three-bedroom, three-bathroom house has about 2,252 square feet of living space and went on the market with an asking price of $699,000.

With six fireplaces, foyer, dining room, in-law apartment and a master bedroom with private bath, this is a home that the new owners will be hard pressed to pick a favorite spot to relax or entertain.

A sign mounted outside shows its construction date and reveals that Hastie was a barber and peruke maker.

“He came to Newport in 1741. His occupation a barber. A very honest, inoffensive man. He understood religion well and was without wavering,” wrote Dr. Ezra Stiles in his diary in 1773 Stiles was a prominent Newporter in the 18th century, the seventh president of Yale University and the pastor of Second Congregational Church in Newport.

The house had been on the market for more than 200 days before its sale.

The property was marketed by Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty of Newport.
