New "Old" Thames St. House Sells for $580,000

A replica of a 1740 house built in 1987 at 31 Thames St. in Newport sold for $580,000 last week, according to data from the statewide Multiple Listing Service.

The recognizable house was built by Arthur Marshall and designed by Richard Long.

“A rare find in downtown Newport offering four bedrooms and two-and-a-half-baths,” its listing description stated.

For someone who wants the irreplaceable, cozy charm of an historical colonial house but dreads the high maintenance costs, low efficiency and other quirks associated with owning an old home, this could be considered a dream property.

Wide old-growth pine planks cover the floors with dense woodgrains only found in trees from forests long since chopped down. Exposed beams that support the walls, ceilings and floors frame the rough plaster walls. Farmhouse doors, detailed wood trim, custom built-in cabinets and other fine woodwork throughout the house belies its true age.

The house is in an historic district and comes with modern amenities, like tankless hot water, insulation, modern wiring and more.
