Newport Short-Term Rental Deadline Approaching

Failing to register a short-term rental with the Newport City Clerk's Office means facing a potential municipal court citation.

NEWPORT, RI — Do you have a home in Newport you are looking to rent out for the summer?

Short-term rental owners in Newport have until the end of the month to register with the city clerk's office, or face a municipal court citation. According to a city ordinance, any property owner engaging in rentals for 30 days or less are required to register their properties with the city no later than May 31st of each year.

In addition to conforming with Newport's zoning rules, property owners must also receive approval from the fire marshal's office prior to engaging in short-term rentals.

Applications are available online here, or in the city clerk’s office, and carry a $100 registration fee.

Newport’s registration is in addition to the state requiring short-term rental property owners to register with the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation.
