Tiverton Man Charged for Heroin Possession in Newport
A suspicious vehicle report led to the arrest of the 29-year-old Monday night.
NEWPORT, RI—A 29-year-old Tiverton man has been charged with narcotics possession after he was allegedly caught with heroin in the parking lot behind Island Liquors.
Police said Derk J. Guenette, of 1113 Bulgarmarsh Road, was arrested after police responded to the lot at around 6:58 p.m. on Monday night, for a suspicious vehicle report.
Upon arrival, police saw the suspect vehicle, a white pickup truck, parked in the lot. Nobody was inside.

Police checked in a nearby CVS and were told by a store employee that a man was in a bathroom and the woman he was with had just left.
Police returned to the truck and the woman, who was not charged, was at the truck and acting nervously. On the ground was a small bag with a white residue.

Guenette returned a short time later. He later told police that he had snorted heroin and there was a bag in the glove compartment.
He was taken into custody without incident and was held for arraignment Tuesday morning.
Along with a bag of heroin in the glove box, police reported finding a small rock of what appeared to be cocaine.
