Tour Bus Catches Fire outside The Breakers Mansion in Newport

Nobody was injured and firefighters were at the scene for about an hour.

NEWPORT, RI—Nobody was hurt after a tour bus caught fire outside The Breakers mansion in Newport on Thursday.

Members of the Newport Fire Department responded to the fire on Thursday morning and were at the scene for about an hour, firefighters said. 

The fire started in the rear of the bus by the engine and spread through the passenger compartment, causing severe damage to the bus. By the time firefighters fully extinguished the blaze, the full-size white bus was left with blown-out windows and most of its rear end a warped crisp.

A firefighter who answered the phone at the department's headquarters said that crews were exceptionally busy today and limited information was available about the bus fire until crews returned later today. 

"There were no injuries," the firefighter said as phones rang in the background. "They were probably there for about an hour before going to the next call."
