Police said Petty allegedly sent a woman with whom he formerly had a relationship a series of messages that were obscene in nature.

The victim told police she thought the messages were threatening.

Petty told police that he was surprised that he could get arrested simply for making phone calls and leaving messages. But police said they had probable cause to arrest him.

He was later released with a future court date.

CAB FARE
Newport police charged Dennis Patrick Shannon, 45, of 18 Pearl St., with refusing to pay a cab fare Monday at around 1:15 p.m.

Police said Shannon got a ride from an Orange Cab and refused to pay the $10 fare.

Police were dispatched to the Motel 6 at Connell Highway where the taxi driver said that Shannon walked away from the cab and was making his way through the RK Towne Center parking lot.

Police caught up with Shannon moments later. He said that he got into the cab with no money to pay the fair. He also said he had no money on him.

Police issued Shannon a summons to appear in court on June 27 and he was released at the scene.
