Trick-Or-Treat 2021: Tips To Stay Safe In Rhode Island
Along with following COVID-19 precautions, here are some ways to stay safe as you hit the streets with your little goblins and ghosts.
PROVIDENCE, RI — Halloween is nearly upon us, and families across Rhode Island are getting ready to hit the streets and fill up on candy.
While it's important to follow coronavirus safety tips to help slow the spread of COVID-19, the Rhode Island Police Chiefs' Association reminded families to stay safe while trick-or-treating.
When picking a costume, make sure all pieces, including wigs and accessories, are fire-resistance. Accessories and props should be made from soft materials, and masks, wigs or headpieces should not impair vision. When it comes to makeup, check to be sure it is non-toxic and test it on a patch of skin first to avoid irritation. Remove all makeup before the child goes to bed.

The National Safety Council reported that children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than any other day of the year. For that reason, it's important to make sure children are visible to drivers and remain aware when they hit the neighborhood streets.
Even if it doesn't perfectly match the costume, make sure to wear sturdy, solid shoes and temperature-appropriate clothing to stay warm. If children are trick-or-treating after dark, fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags, or carry a flashlight or glow sticks to be visible to drivers.

Young children should be accompanied by an adult, and encourage older children and teenagers to stick to a safe, preapproved route. Agree on a time that kids should return home, and remind children to never enter someone else's home or car. When trick-or-treating, stick to familiar, well-lit areas.
When out walking, keep eyes up and off of electronic devices, watching for drivers, and never run across the street.
For drivers who are out an about on Halloween, be extra aware for children on roads, sidewalks and curbs. Slowly enter and exit driveways and alleys.
