Police charged Brenda Saez, 50, of Newport, with domestic simple assault Wednesday evening after she allegedly scratched a man's abdomen during an altercation.

Police said they responded to a Third Street apartment for a disturbance call and Saez and the victim reportedly had been fighting.

Saez, according to a police report, admitted that the 5-inch long scratches on the victim's abdomen were caused by her scratching.

The victim told police that Saez had been drinking all day and "when Saez drinks she 'gets crazy,'" police said.

Saez was held for arraignment on Thursday in Newport County District Court.
