Woman Allegedly Says 'Death By Police', Cuts Officer With Knife

The following arrest was reported by the Newport Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Margaret Wright, 42, of 312 Broadway, was arrested Friday on a felony assault with a dangerous weapon charge. Police were dispatched to the area of the Newport Hospital for a report of a woman who walked out of the emergency room without evaluation after she allegedly tried to hang herself with a noose.

Police said they went to her apartment, but had to go up the fire escape since Wright would not let them inside.  She allegedly said the officers were embarrassing her and that children were in the house.

“I’m gonna get my gun.  I’ll kill you. Death by police,” she allegedly told the officers.

Police tried to push the window off its frame, but shattered the glass. When asked if she had a gun she allegedly replied, “It’s the second amendment, baby — the right to bear arms.”

The officers were able to get into the apartment and Wright allegedly waved around a knife, cutting an officer's hand. The injuries were not considered serious, said police.
