• New Shoreham is home to the Block Island Wind Farm, the first offshore wind farm in the United States. Located three miles off the coast of Block Island, the wind farm generates enough energy to power 17,000 homes and has helped reduce the island's reliance on diesel generators.
• If you're interested in marine life, head to the Block Island Maritime Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating visitors about the island's rich coastal environment. The institute offers hands-on educational programs, guided tours and a touch tank where visitors can interact with live marine creatures.
• Did you know that New Shoreham has a thriving arts community? The island is home to several galleries, including the Spring Street Gallery and Jessie Edwards Studio, which showcase the work of local artists. Visitors can also attend workshops and classes at the Island Free Library or the Block Island Arts and Crafts Guild.
• New Shoreham is also known for its vibrant music scene. During the summer months, the island comes alive with live performances from local and visiting musicians. Be sure to check out the schedule at the Yellow Kittens Tavern, a beloved music venue and the island's oldest tavern, established in 1876.
