North Kingstown Firefighters Battle House Fire In Snowy Conditions

The snow created challenging conditions for North Kingstown firefighters Tuesday, but crews extinguished the flames in about 30 minutes.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — A fire broke out at a home in North Kingstown on Tuesday morning, town fire officials said.

Fire Chief Scott Kettelle said the fire started around 11:15 a.m. at a home on Slocum Road. The fire started in a wood stove in the living room and spread through the first floor to the attic, Kettelle said.

The weather created some challenging conditions for firefighters, but crews still had the flames extinguished in about 30 minutes, Ketelle said.

"Due to the snow, it created a challenge for the firefighters and dragging the snow and simply having to work in the snow takes a toll having to carry around 60 pounds of equipment," Ketelle said.

No fire hydrants were in the area, so Ketelle said West Kingston, Exeter and Jamestown fire departments brought in tankers. University of Rhode Island and Kingston firefighters also assisted on scene.

One person was home when the fire started, but no injuries were reported, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Ketelle said it appears to be accidental.
