📰 News we're reading

1. New Deal Puts RI on the Hook for Pawtucket Minor League Soccer Stadium Bonds (golocalprov.com) — Rhode Island has agreed to back $60 million in new bonds for the privately owned minor league soccer stadium in Pawtucket, putting state taxpayers more firmly on the hook for the project. The refinancing, issued through the Pawtucket Redevelopment Agency, increases the bond amount over the 2024 deal but secures an S&P AA- rating, potentially lowering interest costs even as officials decline to publicly explain the new structure.

2. Former police officer changes plea in Coventry DUI case (wpri.com) — A former Pawtucket police officer has pleaded no contest in a Coventry DUI case, receiving suspended sentences, probation, and a brief license suspension that he’s already completed. He still faces a major civil lawsuit tied to an off-duty 2021 shooting, and although he was acquitted criminally, he ultimately resigned from the Pawtucket force as city officials moved to terminate him.

3. 18 Displaced By Central Falls Fire: Reports (patch.com) — Eighteen people, including two babies, were displaced by an early morning fire at a Mary Street multifamily home in nearby Central Falls, but everyone and a dog escaped safely without injuries. Fire crews from Providence, Pawtucket, Lincoln, East Providence, and Cumberland helped battle the blaze, which reportedly began in the basement and quickly spread upward through the building.

4. Sandra J. Bruno (pvdeye.org) — Pawtucket families are among those touched by the life of Sandra J. Bruno, who founded an inclusive Girl Scout troop welcoming girls from Pawtucket, Providence, and Cranston. The longtime nurse’s aide and community volunteer from Providence died December 6 at age 79. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled today, December 11, at St. Ann Church in Providence.
