Pawtucket And CF Politicians Push For Free Public Transit In RI

Sen. Kallman and Rep. Felix say public transportation is important to climate mitigation, economic growth, and social equity.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Lawmakers from Pawtucket and North Providence have introduced legislation that would provide free transportation on Rhode Island Public Transit Authority buses.

Sen. Meghan E. Kallman (D-Dist. 15) and Rep. Leonela “Leo” Felix (D-Dist. 61)
unveiled the bill at a news conference at Kennedy Plaza in Providence.

Sen. Kallman said public transportation is a climate issue, an environment issue, a neighborhood and quality-of-life issue, and an economic issue.

“When we acknowledge this critical link between public transit, job access and social equity, the need for this legislation becomes obvious. Good public transit is a cornerstone of both climate readiness and social justice," Kallman said in a news release.

Rep. Felix said public transit is part of the fight for racial and social justice. She said low-income and people of color are more likely to rely upon public transportation, and that one of the most significant barriers to transportation is cost.

"This legislation ensures that everyone — regardless of race, ethnicity, or class — has a safe way to get to work or school, and to access critical services like health care or food,” Felix said. “This will help employers as well, giving them access to a wider pool of workers.”

Sen. Kallman said the bill fits in with Climate Jobs Rhode Island, a major initiative to transition the state to a net-zero emission economy by the year 2050.

General Treasurer Seth Magaziner said he supports the measure. He said free public transit can help grow the economy by helping people access employment, education, and job training. He said it also helps people keep more of the money they earn so they can spend it in the local economy.

“I am pleased to stand with our partners today to advocate for a service that would help keep us competitive in the regional economy while supporting Rhode Island workers,” Magaziner stated.
