PAWTUCKET, RI — The state's Legislative Black and Latino Caucus, chaired by Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket), released a statement today condemning racism and intolerance in Rhode Island and across the country.

“From the recent senseless killings of young men of color in Brooklyn Center and Chicago to the unprovoked attacks on Asians across the country, our state and country are sadly seeing hate and bigotry become more blatant and out in the open for all to witness," the caucus declared. "Even in Warren, Rhode Island, despicable and racist stickers are popping up all over town.

"We stand united with the communities of color that we represent and all those who have been impacted by the hatred of their skin color. We all must do better to combat these vicious ideas and actions and we must come together, united in love and acceptance, for the sake of our future generations and the world we leave them,” said Alzate on behalf of her fellow lawmakers.

The Black and Latino Caucus represents and advocates for the interests of disadvantaged people throughout the State of Rhode Island, Alzate said. It seeks to increase a diverse participation and representation in all levels of government. The goal is to close, and ultimately to eliminate, disparities that still exist between white and non-white Americans in every aspect of life.
