Portsmouth Woman, 90, and Little Compton Man, 59, Killed In Crash

The accident happened around 8 p.m., police said. Two other people are hospitalized.

PORTSMOUTH, RI -- Two people died and two are in the hospital after an accident Friday night near Raytheon. No names are being released. The dead are a Portsmouth woman, 90, and a Little Compton man, 59 . They were in the same car driven by a Little Compton woman. She survived, as did the driver of the second car, a Jamaica Plain, Mass., man.

According to police, arriving officers found two cars in West Main Road across from Raytheon. The preliminary investigation showed Houston Smith, 20, of Jamaica Plain, Mass., was driving South when he crossed the double yellow line, went into the wrong lane and collided with an oncoming car. Smith was the only person in his car. Three people were riding in the second car. All three occupants had to be extricated by Portsmouth Fire. So did Smith.

The second car's driver, a Little Compton woman, 58, is at Rhode Island Hospital. Smith was transferred to Rhode Island. He was originally taken to Newport.

Police are asking witnesses to call the station at 401-683-0300 or to call detectives at 401-683-0994. The accident is still under investigation.
