National Weather Service Confirms Portsmouth Tornado

The EF-0 tornado was the first recorded in Newport County since record-keeping started in 1950, the NWS said.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — Newport County saw it's first-ever tornado during Wednesday's storm. On Thursday, the National Weather Service confirmed the EF-0 tornado in Portsmouth.

The last time a tornado was reported in Rhode Island was just under a year ago on Oct. 23 in North Providence. Since 1972, there have been a dozen confirmed tornadoes across the state. This is the first confirmed in Newport County since record-keeping started in 1950, the NWS said.

The tornado hit Portsmouth with winds of 65 miles per hour, the NWS said. There were no reported injuries or deaths as a result of the storm.
