Police Log: Vehicle Hits 6 Cars Before Stopping

A Newport man received a court summons Tuesday after the vehicle he was operating struck at least six vehicles before stopping. No injuries were reported. 

Police received several phone calls around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Eyewitnesses reported a vehicle, traveling north on East Main Road, struck six vehicles and continued driving.

Some of the struck vehicles were parked, while others were stopped at red lights. The vehicles sustained minor damage. 

The vehicle was later observed on Quaker Hill, police said. A police officer attempted to stop the vehicle, which initially did not stop.

The vehicle eventually stopped on East Main Road at Church Lane. 

Police issued a court summons to the operator, 67-year-old Richard Koziara of Newport. Koziara was charged with duty to stop for an accident and reckless driving. 

According to police, alcohol did not appear to be a factor. The incident remains under investigation. 

Portsmouth man arrested for DUI

Joseph Gallagher IV, 23, of 112 Soares Drive, was arrested on Feb. 13 at 1 a.m. Gallagher was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) and refusal to submit to a chemical test. 

Officers stopped a vehicle on East Main Road at Stub Toe Lane. The vehicle was operating erratically, according to police reports. 

Police say they detected an aroma of alcohol on the operator. Gallagher apparently failed a field sobriety test and, after being transported to police headquarters, allegedly refused a chemical test.
