Portsmouth Parking Ban Begins Sunday Night

It's the first day of spring and hopefully, the last snow event of the season.

PORTSMOUTH, RI—This is not the ideal way to kick off the first day of spring—with a parking ban.

With snow in the forecast, the Portsmouth Police Department has instituted a parking ban beginning Sunday at 6 p.m. until Monday at 4 p.m.

The department is thanking residents in advance for respecting the ban to give plow crews room to clear streets and other traffic hazards.

The exact amount of snow that will land on Portsmouth is still unclear. This storm has been particularly confounding for meteorologists. Earlier ,in the week, some models showed more than a foot of snow. By Saturday, the forecast had diminished to just an inch or two, if that. But by Saturday night, the computer models had shifted yet again.

Now, the forecast calls for 4- to 6-inches with snow beginning late Sunday and lasting through Monday.

Monday morning's commute could be a mess and more closings and cancellations are likely.

The snow has also delayed the opening of Town Hall on Monday. It won't open until 11 a.m.

And there will be no school in Portsmouth Monday, either.
