Police Award RI Man With Civilian Lifesaving Award

PORTSMOUTH, RI — Portsmouth police honored a man Tuesday with the Civilian Lifesaving Award after he saved a woman's life last year.
On Jan. 7, 2024, Brian Finn was driving across the Mt. Hope Bridge, when he saw a woman in distress. Police said the woman was attempting to climb over the railing.
"Without hesitation, he stopped his vehicle, ran to her side, and held onto her until officers arrived," a Portsmouth police spokesperson said. "Thanks to his quick thinking and selfless actions, the woman — who had been struggling with serious health challenges — was safely secured and given the help she needed."

Finn in a social media post thanked Portsmouth police for the recognition, but said he'd rather the focus be on mental health awareness.
"I appreciate the recognition, thank you all very much," Finn said. "I'd like to make this more of an example of mental health awareness and the idea that we're all fighting some sort of battle, so please just be kind to each other. Thank you all very much."
