Portsmouth Police Looking To Stop Public From Feeding Coyotes
Portsmouth police and animal control have recently received several complaints regarding people intentionally feeding coyotes.
PORTSMOUTH, RI — Portsmouth police have warned residents that feeding coyotes violates a town ordinance.
Portsmouth police and animal control have recently received several complaints regarding people intentionally feeding coyotes. Police said doing so violates the town ordinance prohibiting the feeding of wildlife and will result in violators being summonsed to court.
"Feeding coyotes changes their normal behaviors and encourages them to act boldly, become unafraid, and be habituated to people, creating dangerous situations in our neighborhoods," a police spokesperson said. "Food left out for coyotes teaches them to linger near homes, approach people and pets, and can ultimately lead to the death of coyotes who have become dangerous. Individuals who provide food sources for coyotes need to consider that they are threatening the safety of our community and realize the negative effects they have on the coyotes themselves."
