As the coordinator of our local prevention coalition, I’m proud to highlight a recent community effort that exemplifies the power of collaboration and innovation in keeping our youth safe.

Leading up to prom season, our coalition partnered with local law enforcement, schools, small businesses, and youth service providers to launch a proactive campaign aimed at preventing underage drinking and raising awareness about Rhode Island’s Social Host Law.

At the heart of the campaign was a “Scan & Learn” QR code challenge that empowered students to learn key facts about alcohol safety and local laws. Hundreds of students participated in the quiz, and those who completed it were entered into a drawing to win one of two $150 gift cards.

What truly set this effort apart was the community-wide support. Local businesses, including florists, salons, storefronts, and formalwear shops, proudly displayed QR code stickers and hangers, reinforcing the message in spaces students naturally frequent.

Equally impactful was the collaboration with law enforcement leaders, who worked alongside coalition members in strategic planning sessions. Their insights and involvement ensured the campaign’s messaging was both clear and meaningful.

To our educators, business owners, officers, volunteers, and fellow coalition members, thank you. Your dedication and teamwork made this campaign possible. I hope it serves as a model of what can happen when a community comes together to protect and empower our youth.

Sincerely,

Coalition Coordinator, Georgie Cranson
