The Robin’s Egg in Portsmouth Steps Up for Families During the Government Shutdown
PORTSMOUTH, RI — In times of uncertainty, it’s often small businesses that show the biggest hearts. As the federal government shutdown continues and families across the country feel the effects of furloughs and financial strain, one local shop in Portsmouth is stepping up to help.
The Robin’s Egg, a beloved children’s consignment store located in Old Almy Village, is known for its beautiful selection of gently loved and new children’s clothing — but this season, its owners, Robin and David, are offering something even more meaningful: compassion, understanding, and community support.

Understanding the Struggle Firsthand
The challenges of a government shutdown aren’t abstract for the couple.
David retired after serving 28 years for the U.S. Navy and, like many others, is currently furloughed due to the ongoing shutdown. The experience has given the pair a unique understanding of how financial uncertainty can impact families — especially during the holiday season.

“We know what it’s like to be worried about bills and still want to make the holidays special for your kids,” Robin said. “We wanted to find a way to give back and remind people they’re not alone.”
That desire to support others has always been at the heart of The Robin’s Egg, where every detail — from the spotless clothing racks to the warm greeting at the door — reflects Robin’s belief that families deserve dignity, even when budgets are tight.
Quality, Affordability, and Care
The Robin’s Egg has built a loyal following among Portsmouth and Aquidneck Island families for its high-quality, gently loved children’s clothing, shoes, and accessories. Each piece that comes through the door is inspected, freshly cleaned, and approved by Robin herself.
Parents can find well-known brands like Hanna Andersson, Janie & Jack, Mini Boden, and Vineyard Vines, all at a fraction of retail prices. For many, it’s a place where affordability meets style — and where every purchase supports sustainability and the local economy.
“Families can come here and know that everything on our racks is something we’d put our own children in,” Robin said. “We take pride in making sure every piece is clean and ready to wear.”
With a constantly refreshed inventory — new items arriving daily — The Robin’s Egg offers shoppers both value and variety. And this season, it’s also serving as a hub for kindness.
Collecting Toys for Local Children
In addition to helping families save money on essentials, The Robin’s Egg is giving back through a holiday toy drive to support the Martin Luther King Community Center in Newport.
The shop is accepting new, unwrapped toys now through mid-December, which will be delivered to the MLK Center to help brighten the holidays for local children in need.
“The MLK Center does so much good for families across Newport County,” Robin said. “We wanted to lend a hand and make sure every child has something to smile about this Christmas.”
Community members are encouraged to stop by the shop to drop off a toy or make a purchase that supports another local family.
Community First — Always
For Robin and David, running The Robin’s Egg isn’t just about resale; it’s about relationships. The couple has built strong ties within the Portsmouth community and sees their store as a space where families can feel supported, not judged.
“Times are hard for so many people right now,” Robin said. “If you’re a federal worker on furlough or just trying to make ends meet, we understand. We’ve been there. We’re all neighbors here.”
That message of unity is what makes The Robin’s Egg such a special part of the local landscape — a reminder that even in difficult times, community compassion shines brightest.
So whether you’re shopping for quality children’s clothing, dropping off a toy for the MLK Center, or just need a friendly smile from someone who understands, The Robin’s Egg is ready to welcome you.
