Toxic Algae Detected In Portsmouth's Lower Melville Pond
Swimming in the infected water could cause nervous system and liver damage.
PORTSMOUTH, RI — Toxic algae has infected Portsmouth's Lower Melville Pond.
The Rhode Island Departments of Health and the Department of Environmental Management both recommended staying out of the water.
"Use caution in all areas of Lower Melville Pond as (the algae) can move locations in ponds and lakes," the two departments said in a media release. "People should not drink untreated water or eat fish from affected waterbodies. Pet owners should not allow pets to drink or swim in this water."

Contact with the algae "can cause irritation of the skin, nose, eyes, and throat," according to the release.
"Symptoms from ingestion of water can include stomachache, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea," the release said. "Less common symptoms can include dizziness, headache, fever, liver damage, and nervous system damage."
