Driver Charged: Portsmouth Head-On Collision

Police have identified the 90-year-old woman and the 59-year-old man killed Friday. The 20-year-old Massachusetts driver was charged.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — The driver who allegedly went into oncoming traffic, Houston Smith, 20, of Jamaica Plain, Mass., has been charged. He was arraigned over the weekend at his hospital bed. The charges are two counts of Driving under the influence, death resulting; transportation of alcohol by a minor; possession of alcohol by a minor; and possession of marijuana (under 1 oz.) He was released on personal recognizance and is due in Newport District Court on Nov. 30.

The accident investigation is continuing, and police are still seeking witnesses.

On Sunday, police identified the victims in Friday night's crash near the Raytheon. The head-on collision killed a 90-year-old Portsmouth woman and a 59-year-old Little Compton man. Dina Occhi, 90, and Theodore White, 59, were passengers in the car driven by Mary Ann White, 58, who was injured. She remains in the hospital.
