As part of the celebrations for Portsmouth's 375th anniversary, the Westchester Polo Club invites women polo players near and far to play in the Anne Hutchinson Northeast Women's Challenge, a tournament featuring the best women players in the region.

The event honors Anne Hutchinson and is part of Portsmouth's 375th Anniversary events.

In 1634, Anne Marbury Hutchinson persuaded her husband to follow her minister, John Cotton, from England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, today's Boston.

Well-educated and not afraid to speak her mind, Anne Hutchinson found herself at odds with the religious  establishment. Officials moved to prosecute the her for having "a very voluble tongue, more bold than a man."

Despite her vigorous defense of her beliefs, she was excommunicated and  banished in 1638, and moved with her family and other followers to Rhode Island. She is considered [one of] the founder[s] of that colony, known as Portsmouth, the first to establish complete separation of church and state and freedom of religion in what would become the United States.

This year is the 375th anniversary of the founding of the town of Portsmouth. To celebrate the historic milestone, the community of Portsmouth is conducting a series of public events and observances over the course of this year. The tournament final takes place at the International Polo Grounds this Sunday, Aug. 11, at 5 p.m. at Glen Farm, 715 East Main Road.
