Here are the top stories in Providence today:
- The CDC has awarded certificates to Providence and Cumberland for the 2020 Water Fluoridation Quality Award. The award recognizes those public water systems that adjust the fluoride concentration in drinking water and achieve a monthly average fluoride level that is in the optimal range for 12 consecutive months in a year. For 2020, a total of 1,292 public water systems in 29 states received these awards. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
- The Providence Public School District is offering several incentives to hire new teachers. On Friday, The Rhode Island Department of Education said the district will offer bonuses of up $10,000 for middle and high school math, science, special education, and bilingual teachers, as well as speech and language, pathologists, psychologists, and social workers. The district is also offering student loan forgiveness incentives up to $25,000 for teachers of color. (Turn to 10)
- A former police officer, Ferenc Karoly, was approved by City Council as the new executive director of the Providence External Review Authority, or PERA, the civilian board with oversight over the Providence Police. (WPRI.com)
- Thursday marked the third night of a growing encampment by homeless advocates outside the Rhode Island State House. (WJAR)
