Boston Man Caught In Providence Kidnapping Infant Child: State Police

RI State Police say Jamaine Johnson, 41, strangled his girlfriend in Peabody, MA, stole her car, and kidnapped their six-month-old child.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A Boston man wanted for kidnapping his six-month-old child in Peabody, Massachusetts, was arrested Tuesday morning in Providence, Rhode Island State Police said.

Around 2:30 a.m., Peabody police alerted state police that a man wanted on kidnapping charges, Jamaine Johnson, 41, may be heading towards Rhode Island with an infant in a stolen car.

According to Peabody police, Johnson strangled his girlfriend, stole her car, and then abducted their child. Police said Johnson made threatening statements, indicating potential harm to himself and the infant if confronted by law enforcement.

State police said their investigation led them to believe Johnson may have been near Interstates 95 and 195 in Providence.

Around 3:20 a.m., state troopers found Johnson and the stolen vehicle on Melissa Street. State police said Johnson tried to run away but was apprehended after a brief struggle, during which he assaulted a police officer.

State police said the infant was found unharmed but was not secured as they were sitting in the front seat of the car. The child was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence for evaluation.

Johnson was arraigned in Sixth District Court and was charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing a police officer, and being a fugitive from justice. Peabody police also charged Johnson with domestic assault and battery, domestic strangulation, kidnapping, threats to commit murder, and larceny of a motor vehicle.
