Here are the top five stories today in Providence:

  1. On Monday, Gov. Dan McKee signed into law an extension to the pandemic policy suspending the cap on workdays for retired educators. The initial policy, which was put in place by an executive order from the governor, in an effort to address staffing shortages across the state during the COVID-19 pandemic, was set to expire March 31. Now it has been extended until the end of the current school year to avoid staffing shortages in schools. (Patch)
  2. Nathan Cooper, 53, of Providence is being held without bail pending his next court date. He is accused of murdering his girlfriend, 40-year-old Sherbert Maddox. Her body was found by police in Cooper's refrigerator, six days after she was shot. She was wrapped in blankets and cellophane. (Providence Patch)
  3. The local real estate market is never boring. Here is a list of the newest properties to hit the Providence area Real Estate market. (Providence Patch)
  4. It's a challenging time for homebuyers in the Ocean State. R.I. Association of Realtors President Agueda Del Borgo said the state currently has the lowest inventory since Rhode Island started keeping records. According to Rhode Island Living, in February 2012 there were over 5,200 single-family homes for sale here, in February 2017 there were 3,097, in February 2021 there were 1,137, and last month there were only 789. 5. Milk is one of the most highly requested items at food pantries. To feed that need, Garelick farms donated 100,000 shelf-stable “Giving Cow” milk cartons to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Giving Cow cartons are even better for food pantries than fresh milk because they have a shelf life of up to 12 months. Fresh milk only has a shelf life of 20 days. (WPRI.com)

Where should you invest as a Providence resident with a $149,000 nest egg? Thanks to a change in the legal code, there’s a new investment Providence residents need to know about. In fact, Bloomberg asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now and many of them chose it.

This may surprise you, but it’s fine art.

Growing your nest egg with art isn’t new. Wealthy families like the Rockefellers have done it for centuries.

Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

Translation: Art could be one of the best investments for uncertain times.

Luckily for you, we found Masterworks. This revolutionary platform lets you invest in art by Warhol, Monet, Picasso without spending millions.

The best part? Anyone from your area can skip their waitlist*.
