Here are the top five stories today in Providence:
- Rhode Island is good at being last in a ranking by personal finance website WalletHub. The website deemed the Ocean State, for the second year in a row, "the worst state in the country for doctors." (Patch)
- Rosangeles Bueno, 40, of Providence was arrested Monday after retrieving a package on her porch that federal authorities say contained more than 4.5 pounds of fentanyl. Prosecutors said the package contained a sound speaker, which had the fentanyl hidden inside it. Bueno, was charged with conspiracy to distribute more than 400 grams of fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute more than 400 grams of fentanyl and unlawful use of a communication facility to facilitate the distribution of a controlled substance. - 'Musician Robert "Bob" Petteruti died March 9, at the home in Cumberland, Rhode Island he shared with his son Tom Petteruti and Tom's wife. He was 92. Considered the "the dean of bass players in Rhode Island," Petteruti was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in 2015. (The Providence Journal)
- Colorectal cancer is a particularly significant health risk for people of Hispanic descent, this, in part, is why Dr. Abdul Saied Calvino, MPH, FACS, a surgical oncologist at Roger Williams Cancer Center, has earned national recognition from the American Cancer Society (ACS) for his development of a comprehensive advocacy program that encourages members of the Hispanic community to receive screenings for colorectal cancer. Dr. Calvino designed and coordinated a community-based education and outreach program, which, dramatically increased colorectal screening participation by Hispanics in the metropolitan Providence area. - A clinic at Hasbro Children's Hospital addresses pediatric gender and sexual health. Dr. Jason Rafferty, who runs the Pediatric Gender and Sexual Health program at Hasbro Children's Hospital explains that parents can, and should, provide support, primary care providers should be involved, too. "The rates are alarming. I know the lifetime suicide risk is, among the transgender population, is like 40% compared to .4% among the U.S population," said Rafferty. (Turn to 10)
