Hawkins Street Bridge Remains Closed to Vehicular Traffic
The bridge will open to pedestrian travel, starting 10/25 at 8 p.m.

By City of Providence]PROVIDENCE, RI – The City of Providence announced today that the Hawkins Street Bridge crossing the West River and Rhode Island Route 146 will remain closed to all vehicular traffic but will open for pedestrian travel on Oct. 25, beginning at 8 p.m.
The closure follows recommendation from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) which informed the City of needed structural repairs. RIDOT informed the City today (10/25) that the bridge could be opened for pedestrian and bicycle travel.
Residents are advised that they should expect delays during their commute and seek alternate routes. Suggested alternate routes are outlined in the attached document.

The Hawkins Street Bridge was included in the recently passed Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and was scheduled for improvements in Fiscal Year 2019. The City is currently evaluating a timeline and funding opportunities to address these issues sooner than scheduled.
