Here are the top stories in Providence today:
- A Providence man admitted to falsely using a Social Security number to defraud RI Food Stamps and Medicaid programs. Diomedes Ramirez Rodriguez, 48, pleaded guilty to using another person's information to gain $39,023 in health care benefits from RITE care, Rhode Island’s Medicaid Managed Care Program and SNAP benefits from Rhode Island Department of Human Services. Rodriguez is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 28, 2022. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
- The first round of monthly guaranteed income payments has been issued to 110 Providence residents. The one-year program was announced back in July as a way to research the concept of providing monthly, no-strings-attached $500 checks to low-income families. The residents were randomly selected out of 4,000 applicants. The median income of the recipients is just $913 a month, and 60 percent of the participants have children under 18. (WPRI.com)
- A federal grand jury indicted Providence priest James Jackson on child pornography charges. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
