Here are the top five stories in Providence today:
- Providence College honors its longest-serving president, alumnus Rev. Brian Shanley, with a new residence hall named after him. Rev. Shanley, a Warwick native was given the honor of shoveling dirt himself for the new dormitory at the groundbreaking ceremony. (WPRI.com)
- Eighteen Providence athletes participated in the Boston Marathon this past Monday, Eliot Laidlaw, 22 was one of those runners, he finished in the top 700 with a time of 2:43:14. Congratulations Eliot! (Providence Patch)
- By the end of May, a plan will be submitted to the city of Providence, by the Providence Municipal Reparations Commission, on how to spend the $14.5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for reparation payments for people impacted by slavery, systemic racism and mistreatment of Native Americans. The money may reportedly be used towards housing and land ownership for African-American people, college scholarships, health care, and even direct cash payments to those impacted. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
- Over the weekend, a car, which was reportedly stolen from Cranston was found partially submerged in a lake at Roger Williams Park near Carousel Village. Police reportedly believe the car was intentionally driven into the lake. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
