ProJo Religion Writer Dies In Tragic Milwaukee Bridge Accident

Richard "Dick" Dujardin was crossing a bridge in Milwaukee when it began to rise, causing him to fall to his death. He was 77.

MILWAUKEE, WI — The religious community of Rhode Island lost a devout voice, who covered some of the most topic's important moments across the globe and brought them back to New England for readers of the Providence Journal.

Richard "Dick" Dujardin died in a tragic bridge accident in Milwaukee on Monday, according to a report from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner.

Dujardin was walking across a drawbridge near Kilbourn Avenue and Riverwalk Way in the city when it began to rise. The report said Dujardin tried to hold on, but lost his grip and fell to the pavement below. He was 77.

According to a piece from Mark Patinkin in the Providence Journal, Dujardin was heading to a noon mass.

Religion is what news junkies in the area known Dujardin best for. According to Patinkin, Dujardin brought first hand perspective of huge religious events back to the people of Rhode Island.

He covered the naming of three popes, starting with John Paul II in 1978, and most recently Pope Francis in 2013. But he wasn't just known for covering the big stuff, his looks into Rhode Island's Muslim community during the invasion of Kuwait in 1990 was just as impactful, Patinkin writes.
