Here are the top three stories today in Providence:
- Reportedly, Providence Police issued the following statement on Friday evening, "Please be advised that Christopher James, age 34, who was arrested by Providence Police earlier today for a Breaking and Entering that occurred on Pembroke Avenue last night [Thursday] is not a suspect at this time in the recent incidents of sexual assault within the Elmhurst neighborhood.
Police continue to urge residents in the area to have a heightened awareness of their surroundings and alert police immediately at 272-3121 with information pertinent to this ongoing investigation in regard to a serial rapists. (GoLocalProv) - The brainchild of Hope High School's community specialist John Rivera, a new after-school program is teaching students how to express themselves through art. Using school walls as their canvasses, students were paired with community mentors to create unique murals. Rivera reportedly said the beauty of this project is that each mural is different, and it gives students a voice without them having to speak at all. (WPRI.com)
- Gunshots on West Friendship Street were investigated around 10:15 p.m. on Thursday night. Reportedly, the responding officers were told the suspect vehicle may be a white Dodge Hellcat that fled toward Elmwood Avenue, according to police who received a second report of gunshots, this time involving a white Jeep in the area of Elmwood and Parkis Avenue. Police have not been able to locate any evidence there. (WPRI.com)
- Did you know the Kentucky Derby Trophy was made right here in Rhode Island? The coveted solid gold cup was made at S.R. Blackinton in Smithfield. Susanne Blackinton-Juaire and her husband Bill Juaire. Susanne's family has been creating the trophy since 1975. This year marks a special event for Susan and Bill as it was the first time ever that the S.R. Blackinton name was engraved onto the bottom of the Derby trophy. (RI Monthly)
