Here are the top stories today in Providence:
- A former Providence school admin is challenging his arrest, saying surveillance footage doesn’t show an alleged foot rub. Olayinka Alege, a former superintendent for Providence Public Schools, was charged with misdemeanor simple assault and/or battery in May, after an underage boy told Warwick Police that Alege massaged his foot without his consent at a gym. Judge Mary McCaffrey has not yet ruled on whether Alege will get a Franks hearing and said the hearing will be continued until Oct. 29. (WPRI.com)
- A Providence author has been named a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction. Laird Hunt, author of eight novels, a collection of stories, and two book-length translations from French, has been nominated for his novel, Zorrie. Hunt currently teaches in the Literary Arts Program at Brown University. (GoLocalProv)
- Providence police are searching for a suspect after shots were fired on Broad St. Saturday night. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
- The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be temporarily closed for the next 10 days, due to zoonotic illnesses. (WJAR)
