Here are the top stories today in Providence:
- Stopping the time change! Twice a year we change our clocks, falling back in Autumn and springing forward in spring. Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has long been an avid supporter of eliminating the twice-annual clock changes, arguing that a permanent switch to Daylight Saving Time would benefit all Americans. On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate approved the legislation, titled the "Sunshine Protection Act," by unanimous consent. It now heads to the House of Representatives. (Patch)
- It's like being part of a secret society, but instead, it's getting the chance to order artisanal, handmade, Butterbang croissants from baker and proprietor Brian Leosz, who runs a small business in Providence. He is a staff of one and you have to order ahead of time for a specific pick-up time. Leosz makes every croissant himself and sells them all out of his croissant window. Choose from classic, chocolate, almond or almond chocolate. (The Providence Journal)
- Thanks to a $12-million gift to the Rhode Island Foundation, the largest in the foundation’s 106-year history, high school graduates who plan to pursue undergraduate studies at six private and public colleges and universities in Rhode Island will soon have a chance to receive new scholarships. (The Providence Journal)
- John A. Amaral, 29, of Providence, has pled guilty to possessing and accessing child pornography through an anonymous internet network. Amaral was among a group of people whose IP addresses were flagged by the FBI for being used to access the network. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))
- Thirty-one-year-old Sarah Jane Cavanaugh was arrested Monday and charged with forgery, wire fraud, and identity theft. According to prosecutors, Cavanaugh claimed she served as a Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2009-2016, rising to the rank of corporal. She claimed she developed lung cancer from inhaling the fumes of burn pits and explosives and was being treated at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. She was released on $50,000 bond.
