Here are the top stories today in Providence:
- Gov. Dan McKee, the R.I. Department of Transportation (RIDOT), and members of the state’s congressional delegation broke ground on a $78 million project to address chronic congestion issues and structural deficiencies on the westbound portion of the Washington Bridge. The project will also add a new lane to the 52-year-old bridge with an off-ramp to Waterfront Dr. in Providence. RIDOT said when the project is complete, the average morning commute from the state line to I-95 will be trimmed by about 40 percent, from an average of 16 minutes to nine minutes. (WPRI.com)
- As a way to address the increase in violence throughout the city, Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza is looking to spend up to $1.6M in federal coronavirus relief funding to establish nonviolence training and youth mentorship programs. The city recently opened requests for proposals for both initiatives and is planning to allocate up to $500,000 in American Rescue Plan funds for training and up to $1.1 million for mentorship. Elorza said the idea began taking shape in May when nine people were injured in a shooting. (Fairfield Citizen)
- A paving company, The Narragansett Improvement Co., is seeking permission to store asphalt and other materials along Providence's waterfront. (ecoRI news)
- The Beatrice, Providence's first boutique hotel to open in nearly a decade, announced its grand opening in Downtown Providence on Tuesday. (Newport Buzz)
- Brown University graduate, Guido Imbens, was one of three recipients of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences on Monday. (GoLocalProv)
