1 Dead, Others Seriously Injured In Smithfield After Subway Shop Crash

SMITHFIELD, RI — One person is dead and others are seriously injured after a car crashed into a Subway sandwich shop in Smithfield Wednesday afternoon, according to multiple reports.
The crash occurred at the Subway at the Apple Valley Mall on Putnam Pike, where one of the victims died at the scene, WCVB reported.
Four other people were taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life threatening, according to the outlet.

At least two people were pinned underneath the car when first responders rushed inside the shop, Rhode Island State Police told Boston 25 News.
Smithfield Deputy Fire Chief Steven Quattrini told WPRI both customers and workers are among the injured. Quattrini added that it appears the driver was speeding through the parking lot before the crash.

The Subway sustained heavy damage and will be closed until further notice, Boston25 reported, adding that the Planet Fitness next door was also damaged and is temporarily closed.
