Eco Depot Hosting Spring Cleaning Collection March 23

In an effort to promote a safer home and a cleaner state, Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) will be hosting a free Eco-Depot collection at the Smithfield Department of Public Works on Saturday, March 23 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 3 Spragueville Road, Smithfield.

Eco-Depot is a free service provided by RIRRC for state residents only that allows for the proper handling, packaging, storing, transportation and disposal of household hazardous wastes. In 2012 alone, RIRRC disposed of approximately 932,914 lbs of hazardous waste and kept 2,226 pounds of mercury out of the state’s soil and ground water, all at no cost to Rhode Island residents.

“With the winter season soon drawing to a close, we encourage all Rhode Islanders to start their Spring Cleaning early,” said Joe Rotella, Special Waste Manager for RIRRC. “Getting rid of these materials is a great way to free up space around the house and provide a safe environment for you and your family. Simply make an appointment and our trained staff will be ready for your drop-off upon arrival.”

Common household hazardous waste materials include fluorescent light bulbs, gasoline, pesticides, oil-based paint, used motor oil and lawn and pool chemicals. When not properly collected and disposed, household hazardous waste products can cause harm to the local environment by contaminating Rhode Island’s waterways.
